Very Deliberate Pacing
Jeff Nichols is quickly becoming my current favorite director. His stories are top notch and the skill with which he crafts his movies is impressive. In this film Michael Shannon plays one of the most empathetic characters brought to life on screen. The direction and acting was so done so well I understood, cared for and empathized with him more than any other in recent memory. Jessica Chastain (who I have been critical of in the past) was superb and equally as impressive, giving what I think is the best performance of her career. This film covers a lot of ground in its 2 hour run time touching on myriad of subjects but really focusing on mental health and the importance of family. Of all Jeff Nichols films I would recommend this one last, its pacing is very slow and a few aspects of the plot are left up to the interpretation of the viewer.
